When are onions in season?
Onions are typically in season in the UK from late spring to early autumn. The peak season for onions is usually during the summer months, from June to August. However, onions can be stored for long periods of time, so they are available all year round. Some varieties of onions are also grown in greenhouses, which allows them to be harvested throughout the year.
British onions are available in different types: spring onions, shallots, red onions, brown onions and white onions. Each variety has its own unique flavor, texture and ideal use, for example, spring onions are best used raw in salads, sandwiches, or as a garnish, red onions are best used cooked or pickled, brown onions are best used cooked in soups, stews, casseroles and sauces and shallots are best used in dressings, marinades and sautés.
